Mayagüez is a city rich in vegetation and has a gorgeous bay where sunsets are particularly beautiful. Desecheo island is a wildlife refuge with a variety of land and sea life and can be observed from the bay, it is located 14 miles out from the bay.

The city of Mayagüez was founded in 1760 by the the name of “Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria”, but because of the frequent use of its inhabitants of the name “en la Rivera de Mayagüez”, today this city is known as Mayagüez, name that means "place of waters". The founder of this town was Don Faustino Martínez de Matos. After its foundation, the economic state of the town was exclusively agriculture. The city grew, increasing its imports and exports. In 1839 the Customs building was constructed, in 1848 the Barracks of Infantry where built, that building is actually the main offices in Mayaguez of the U.S. Postal Service. In 1870, the first transportation and communication system in Puerto Rico was created; the telegraph was inaugurated from Mayagüez to San Juan and in 1872 the first urban railroad settled down. In 1896, the construction of Christopher Columbus statue ended in the main square of Mayagüez and today you can admire its beauty.Great part of the urban property was affected by the San Fermín earthquake in October 11, 1918. With the help of the residents, the city was reconstructed. In 1926, the current building of the Major's offices where built.
